Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed today stated that the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, the probable independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency and spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha, is not an isolated incident. This attack occurred the day after the schedule for the 13th National Parliament Election was announced.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Salahuddin Ahmed met with the Chief Adviser of the interim government, where he emphasized that the attack on the prospective national parliamentary candidate was both professional and premeditated. Salahuddin expressed that this was an attack on Bangladesh itself, highlighting the importance of maintaining the anti-fascist national unity during discussions with the Chief Adviser.
Salahuddin further elaborated on the need to preserve national unity amidst political debates regarding the upcoming election. He asserted that the debates should not escalate to levels that undermine unity, emphasizing the importance of upholding the spirit and aspirations of the July Uprising. He accused those who oppose the election and democratic transition of being involved in such attacks, regardless of their location inside or outside the country.
The BNP leader affirmed that democratic parties are working together to ensure the election is meaningful, credible, and neutral, aligning with global standards. He noted changes in the political culture reflecting public expectations and the mass uprising’s aspirations.
Inqilab Mancha’s call for a National Resistance Rally in protest of the attack on Osman Hadi has been welcomed by BNP. Salahuddin stressed the importance of political leader security, urging the government to guarantee their safety and maintain unity among parties to confront terrorism effectively.
Salahuddin recalled a similar attack on a prospective BNP candidate in the Chittagong-8 constituency on November 5, criticizing the lack of proper investigation and action. He suggested that thorough investigations and justice could prevent such incidents. The Ministry of Home Affairs has been urged to take more active measures against terrorism, with the Chief Adviser requested to implement necessary actions. Salahuddin also mentioned a commitment to issue a joint statement and work collectively in response to these challenges.
