Dhaka: Retired Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury, Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CIED), today highlighted the critical role of integrity, impartiality, courage, and competence in the judiciary as the strongest guarantees of justice. Speaking at a day-long workshop in Gulshan, he emphasized the importance of judges approaching every case with equal zeal, rigor, and devotion, reminding them of the constitutional mandate to protect fundamental human rights and freedoms.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the workshop was organized by the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Dhaka. Justice Moinul urged judges to foster a judicial system that inspires confidence among all citizens, from hawkers in Dhaka to garment workers in Khulna and rickshaw pullers in Sylhet.
Huma Khan, Chief of Mission of the OHCHR in Dhaka, underscored the necessity of impartiality, professionalism, and accountability in the judiciary to ensure justice. She expressed concern over the fate of victims of enforced disappearances and the challenges their families face, including social pressure, mental distress, and intimidation during legal proceedings.
Khan praised the commission for its fair and impartial execution of duties, expressing gratitude to its chairman, members, and all involved. The workshop also featured inputs from commission members Justice Md. Farid Ahmed Shibli and Md. Nur Khan, as well as Law and Justice Division Secretary Liaquet Ali Molla. Md. Sajjad Hossain conducted the working session, while Dr. Nabila Idris moderated the event.
Approximately 90 participants, including judges from various courts and tribunals across the country, attended the workshop, focusing on enhancing the judicial system's integrity and effectiveness.
