Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Mahfuj Alam today highlighted a significant increase in women's participation across various sectors following the July mass uprising. At an event titled 'Women in Establishing Democracy: What We Have Gained,' organized by Women in Democracy at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) auditorium, Mahfuj expressed optimism about the future involvement of women in mainstream politics.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahfuj emphasized the complex nature of Bangladeshi society, which intertwines religion, tradition, legal frameworks, and modernity. He noted that understanding these elements is crucial for creating pathways toward social consensus. He remarked on the historical trajectory of Bangladeshi women over the past 150 years, stressing the need for a comprehensive understanding of this history to address current challenges effectively.
Mahfuj further stressed that the implementation of policies for women's empowerment requires more than just governmental efforts. He called for active participation from political parties, institutions, and civil society. 'What is needed is to ensure open spaces for political parties, so that they can take part in policy formulation and implementation,' he stated.
The event also featured speeches from prominent figures such as Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, human rights activist Shahidul Alam, Professor Dilara Chowdhury, and several others who shared insights on women's roles in democracy.
