Dhaka: A youth tragically lost his life after jumping into the Turag River in a desperate attempt to escape a public chase during an alleged bus arson attempt in the capital, police reported. Another suspect has been apprehended in relation to the incident.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, on Thursday night, several youths reportedly engaged in setting fire to a bus using kerosene from a plastic bottle near the west side of Sohel Engineering Workshop at Uttar Nawaberbagh. The act was allegedly being recorded on a mobile phone.
Local residents, upon noticing the arson attempt, pursued the perpetrators, managing to catch one of them at the scene. In a bid to evade capture, another youth, identified as Saiyaf, 18, jumped into the nearby Turag River but unfortunately drowned as he was unable to swim. Although locals rescued him and transported him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, he was declared dead by the attending medical staff.
The individual apprehended at the scene has been identified as Rudra Mohammad Nahian Amir Sani, 18, as per a press release from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Media and Public Relations Division.
Police have stated that efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining suspect involved in the bus arson attempt, and legal proceedings against the arrested youth are currently underway.
