Thakurgaon: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that a vested quarter is attempting to delay the upcoming national elections. 'Lingering the election means destroying us and destroying this country. An elected government is very much needed right now,' he asserted, urging the interim government to conduct the elections promptly.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul was speaking as the chief guest at a view-exchange meeting with Thakurgaon district freedom fighters and their children. He alleged that efforts are underway to delay the election by fostering societal division through religious sentiments, emphasizing the importance of resisting such attempts.

The BNP Secretary General recounted the atrocities of 1971, where thousands were killed, and many women were tortured. He highlighted that the killings were orchestrated in collaboration with the Pakistani occupation forces during the Liberation War. Fakhrul expressed concern that a quarter is attempting to undermine the spirit and sacrifices of the Liberation War, despite the country's liberation owing to the sacrifice of thousands.

He stressed that the nation's history, including both the 1971 Liberation War and the 2024 uprising, cannot be forgotten. 'The 1971 is true and the 2024 is true too. In 1971, we liberated the country by driving out the Pakistani forces and on the other hand, we got a country free from fascism in 2024,' he remarked.

Fakhrul reinforced the notion that the country belongs to its people, highlighting the need to guide it towards prosperity. He recalled the personal sacrifices of Khaleda Zia and her sons during the Liberation War, affirming that the war remains deeply ingrained in their hearts.

The meeting was chaired by Nur Karim, convener of the Thakurgaon District Muktijoddha Unit Command, and attended by key figures such as Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council convener Naeem Jahangir, member secretary Sadek Ahmed Khan, Thakurgaon District BNP president Mirza Faisal Amin, and former state minister Alhaj Mansur Ali Sarkar.
