Dhaka: Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has announced a government initiative to honor and celebrate the life and works of the country’s living legends. He shared this information in a Facebook post, responding to social media inquiries about why notable writers and artists are not celebrated during their lifetimes.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Farooki elaborated on the government’s plans, explaining that although they intended to honor Language Movement veteran Ahmed Rafiq, they could not proceed due to his declining health. The initiative will start at the local level and gradually expand internationally, with the Shilpakala Academy preparing an annual calendar to execute the plan.

Farooki emphasized the importance of personalizing the celebrations to reflect each individual’s personality, work, and philosophy. He mentioned that initial steps have already been taken, including a recent event with artist Sabina Yasmin. An upcoming event, ‘Dhrupadi Sandhya’, is planned for Ustad Alauddin Khan’s birthday, featuring performances by contemporary artists and attendance by Ustad’s grandson Siraj Khan from the USA.

The adviser also outlined future plans to honor a diverse group of artists, literary, and cultural figures, both living and deceased, including names like Badruddin Umar, Selim Al Deen, and rock legend James. He expressed regret for not being able to honor Ahmed Rafiq while he was alive due to his health condition.

Farooki addressed misconceptions about financial assistance provided to Ahmed Rafiq, asserting that the government has consistently fulfilled its responsibilities, albeit discreetly to maintain the dignity of the writer.

Furthermore, plans are in place to establish new music and dance schools under Shilpakala Academy’s supervision, along with launching new departments and organizing international film, theater, and music festivals.
