Dhaka: Bangla Academy Director General (DG) Prof Mohammad Azam today emphasized the importance of prioritizing the education sector for fundamental reforms across all sectors of the country. He made these remarks while speaking at a discussion organized by the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement at the International Mother Language Institute. The discussion was titled "What will our textbooks be like?"
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Azam highlighted the United Nations (UN) recommendation that countries allocate at least 6 percent of their GDP to education. He pointed out that developed countries spend about 8 percent of their budgets on education, whereas in Bangladesh, the education budget remains insufficient to meet the sector's needs.
Prof Azam further urged political parties to clearly state in their election manifestos whether they plan to increase the education budget. Other guests at the discussion also addressed various issues related to the country's education system.
