Government Approves Import of 145,000 Metric Tons of Fertilizer from Four Countries

Dhaka: The government today approved four separate proposals to import approximately 145,000 metric tons of fertilizer through state-level agreements. This decision was made during the 34th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) for the year, presided over virtually by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the fertilizer will be sourced from Saudi Arabia, Russia, Morocco, and China to ensure an uninterrupted supply of agricultural inputs ahead of the upcoming cultivation season. The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will oversee all imports under existing intergovernmental contracts, with proposals submitted by the Agriculture Ministry.

Under the first proposal, BADC will import 40,000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer from Saudi Arabia's MA'ADEN at a cost of Taka 389.86 crore. Each metric ton is priced at $795.00, marking the ninth shipment under the ongoing deal with the Saudi supplier.

The second proposal includes 35,000 metric tons of MOP fertilizer from Russia's JSC "Foreign Economic Corporation (Prodintorg)" at a total cost of Taka 154.90 crore, with a unit price of $361.00 per ton. This shipment is part of the second lot from Russia.

The third proposal involves importing 30,000 metric tons of TSP fertilizer from Morocco's OCP NUTRICROPS, totaling Taka 215.28 crore. Each ton will cost $585.33, representing the fourth lot from the North African supplier.

Finally, BADC will import 40,000 metric tons of DAP fertilizer from China's Banyan International Trading Limited. The contract is valued at Taka 389.25 crore, with a per-ton price of $793.75, making it the second lot under the agreement with the Chinese company.

In addition to fertilizer imports, the Purchase Committee meeting approved several key proposals. These included the import of LNG and the printing of free textbooks for primary-level students in 2026.

The Industries Ministry received approval to import 20,000 metric tons of phosphoric acid for DAP Fertilizer Company Limited at a cost of Taka 191.44 crore, with the recommended supplier being M/S Sun International FZE, UAE.

Another proposal from the Industries Ministry was approved to import 30,000 metric tons of bagged granular urea fertilizer from Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO), Bangladesh, at a cost of Taka 174.33 crore.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division was authorized to purchase one cargo of LNG for delivery in November 2025 from the spot market, costing Taka 485.25 crore. The supplier is M/S Total Energies Gas and Power Ltd., United Kingdom.

In the education sector, the Primary and Mass Education Ministry's proposal to print, bind, and supply 2,94,68,367 copies of free textbooks for Ibtedayi level students for the 2026 academic year was approved, at a cost of Taka 127.66 crore.
