Barguna: A court here today sent 12 pro-Awami League lawyers of the Barguna Bar Association to jail for their alleged involvement in damaging the local BNP office in 2023. Barguna District and Sessions Judge Saifur Rahman passed the order, rejecting the bail petitions of the accused lawyers when they appeared before the court seeking bail in the case filed with Sadar Thana.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the lawyers sent to jail include former president of the Barguna Bar Association Mahbubul Bari, along with Mojibor Rahman, Imran Hossain, M Mofizul Haque, Saiful Islam, Amirul Islam, Abdur Rahman, Humayun Kabir, Nurul Islam, Humayun Kabir Poltu, Md Mamun Molla, and Junayed Juwel. All of these individuals are supporters of the Awami League.
The case was filed by Noimul Islam, son of the former general secretary of the district BNP, the late S M Nazrul Islam, on April 30 of this year. The case accuses 158 people, including these lawyers, under the Special Powers Act and the Explosive Substance Act. Noimul Islam claims that on March 17, 2023, the accused led a procession and attacked the district BNP office, causing damage to furniture and electronic equipment, setting fire to the office, and detonating several crude bombs inside and outside the premises.
The complaint also names Sohag Mridha, a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Sheschhasebok Dal of the Sadar Upazila unit, which has stirred adverse reactions among local BNP leaders. State counsel Nurul Amin stated that the detained lawyers appeared before the court to request bail, but the court ordered them to be sent to jail, denying their bail petitions.
