Dhaka: The interim government has approved a revised maximum retail price (MRP) list for 10 types of coronary stents, aiming to make these essential medical devices more affordable and accessible for cardiac patients nationwide. This initiative is expected to bring financial relief to many patients requiring cardiac interventions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Health Services Division under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued a circular revising the prices of coronary stents produced by prominent international manufacturers, including Abbott, Boston Scientific, and Medtronic. The circular, signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Mohammad Mozammel Hossain, highlighted that the decision was based on recommendations from the National Committee on Essential Drugs and Medical Devices Pricing.
The directive outlines that the new prices will apply to hospital procurement and patient billing, adjusted to align with comparative market rates in India, resulting in substantial reductions. The approved retail prices are as follows: Resolute Onyx (Medtronic) – Tk 90,000; Promus Elite (Boston Scientific) – Tk 72,000; Promus Premier (Boston Scientific) – Tk 70,000; Synergy (Boston Scientific) – Tk 90,000; Synergy Shield (Boston Scientific) – Tk 90,000; Synergy XD (Boston Scientific) – Tk 1,00,000; Xience Prime (Abbott) – Tk 66,000; Xience Alpine (Abbott) – Tk 90,000; Xience Sierra (Abbott) – Tk 90,000; and Onyx Trucor (Medtronic) – Tk 50,000.
Hospitals have been instructed to adopt the new pricing structure for procurement and billing processes. Suppliers are permitted a maximum 5% supply margin over the approved prices. The directive also mandates all relevant hospital authorities to maintain proper documentation, including invoices and procurement data, and to submit these during audits to ensure transparency in the implementation of the new pricing policy.
