Dhaka: Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan today announced that the interim government is placing a high priority on sustainable and green tourism. The government is undertaking various initiatives aimed at balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and cultural conservation within the tourism sector.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Industries Adviser made these remarks while inaugurating a four-day international workshop titled “Workshop on Sustainable Practices in Green Tourism” held at a hotel in Dhaka. The event was attended by Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), and presided over by Ministry Secretary Md. Obaidur Rahman.
Adilur highlighted that although Bangladesh holds immense potential in tourism, its contribution to the national economy remains relatively low compared to other countries. He noted the country’s natural and historical attractions, such as the world’s largest mangrove forest-the Sundarbans-and the longest sea beach in Cox’s Bazar, alongside historic sites like Mahasthangarh, Paharpur, and Sonargaon, which continue to draw both domestic and international tourists.
Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, speaking at the event, emphasized that the global eco-tourism market, valued at approximately $600 million, is one of the fastest-growing sectors but remains centered in smaller communities. He pointed out the significant potential Bangladesh has in developing its sustainable and green tourism sector.
The workshop, jointly organized by the National Productivity Organization (NPO) of Bangladesh and the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) of Japan, features participation from representatives, policymakers, researchers, and tourism entrepreneurs from 24 APO member countries. Md. Nurul Alam, Director General of NPO, delivered the welcome address.
Throughout the four-day event, 15 sessions will cover topics such as tourism, sustainable eco-tourism, and climate change. Participants from APO member countries are expected to present research papers and concept notes on sustainable tourism, providing insights and strategies for future growth in this sector.
