Dhaka: An allegation has been made against 62 people, including former Awami League lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury and former DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah, at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for the killing of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Nuruzzaman Jony in Khilgaon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jony's father, Yakub Ali, brought these allegations at the office of the Chief Prosecutor of the ICT. Previously, Yakub Ali had filed a case on September 3 of the previous year with Khilgaon Thana, naming Saber Hossain Chowdhury, the Member of Parliament from the Khilgaon-Sabujbagh area, among others.
The complaint details that Jony was taken into custody by a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of police on January 19, 2015, at approximately 8:00 am while he was on his way home from Dhaka Central Jail after meeting his younger brother. The complainant further alleges that Jony was subsequently taken to various locations, including the DB South office, where he was subjected to severe torture.
Jony's family, including his pregnant wife Munia Parvin, sought help at Khilgaon Thana, the DB South office, and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) office, but were consistently denied information about his confinement. Jony was reportedly killed in a 'crossfire' incident at Khilgaon Jorpukur playground in the early hours of January 20, where local residents heard his cries for help, including pleas for water and for his mother.
Witnesses such as Sanjida Akhter Setu and Lovely Begum reported seeing numerous police officers, including those in plain clothes, at the scene. The police claimed Jony was killed in an encounter. His body was later taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for an autopsy, where relatives discovered 16 bullet wounds and additional injury marks, raising further suspicions about the nature of his death.
