Pakistan to Import Textile Waste from Bangladesh to Boost Recycling Industry

Dhaka: Pakistan can meet the growing demands of its recycling industry by importing garment industry waste from Bangladesh, announced Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu emphasized the potential benefits of this trade collaboration during a meeting with Muhammad Wasif, Charg© d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission. The meeting took place at the BGMEA office in Uttara, where the possibilities of strengthening trade ties between the two countries were discussed. The BGMEA President highlighted Bangladesh’s position as the largest producer of jute in the world, noting the significant demand for Bangladeshi jute fibre in Pakistan. He suggested that if Pakistan imports jute fibre, it could be advantageous for both nations.



The meeting was attended by Trade and Investment Attach© of the High Commission Zain Aziz, BGMEA Vice-President Md Rezwan Selim, and Directors Faisal Samad, Sumaiya Islam, and Fahima Akhter. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in the garment and textile sectors, with an emphasis on increasing textile imports from Pakistan and exporting ready-made garments and accessories from Bangladesh to Pakistan. Bangladesh’s progress in garment accessories production was also highlighted.



Both parties agreed to share knowledge, send business delegations, and collaborate on exhibitions and workshops. They also discussed the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) previously signed between the BGMEA and the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) to enhance bilateral trade. The BGMEA President stressed the importance of active involvement from business communities in both countries for the successful implementation of the MoU.



In a move to further accelerate trade and investment cooperation, both sides decided to appoint focal points to streamline these efforts.
