Dhaka: Rawhides of sacrificial animals are being sold at government fixed prices, stated Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin. A special team from the Ministry of Commerce is actively working to ensure the effectiveness of these government-set prices.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sk. Bashir Uddin shared these insights during a visit to oversee the management of rawhides at Posta under the Lalbagh area in the capital. He mentioned that while rawhides with salt have predetermined prices, those sold without salt are priced between Taka 700 and Taka 800, marking an increase compared to previous years.

Addressing the challenges faced by seasonal rawhide traders, Bashir noted that a lack of experience and knowledge in rawhide preservation often results in lower prices due to the poor condition of the hides. However, traders managing to maintain better quality are receiving fair prices ranging from Taka 1,200 to Taka 1,300.

The Commerce Adviser emphasized that, following directives from the Chief Adviser, efforts have been made to balance demand and supply, with district and upazila administrations working towards fair management of rawhides. A national control room has also been established for continuous monitoring.

Bashir cautioned against unprincipled businessmen who might disrupt the rawhide sector. He highlighted measures taken by the interim government, including lifting the ban on exporting wet blue leather and disbursing Taka 220 crore in incentives. Additionally, salt has been distributed across districts, upazilas, and even mosques.

He observed a rise in rawhide prices from the previous day and anticipated further increases for salted hides. With improved preservation capabilities, rawhides can now be stored for two to three months, and Bashir urged sellers to hold off until fair prices are guaranteed.

The announcement was made in the presence of Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, Additional Secretary M Abdur Rahim Khan, and Bangladesh Tanners Association President Md Shahin Ahmed, among others.
