Dhaka: The holy Eid-ul-Azha, a significant religious festival for Muslims, was observed across the country with solemnity and enthusiasm as thousands gathered for prayers and animal sacrifices.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the festival, which marks an event from 4,500 years ago involving the willingness of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Hazrat Ismail (AS), was celebrated by Muslims offering prayers and sacrifices as a sign of devotion to Allah.
Eid prayers were conducted at various Eidgahs, mosques, and residences nationwide, with the main congregation held at the Jatiya Eidgah on the High Court premises. Attendees included Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Justice, and members of the Council of Advisers, among others. Security was heightened by law enforcement to ensure safety during the congregations.
Multiple Eid Jamaats were held at Baitul Mukarram mosque, beginning at 7 am. The oldest congregation took place at Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj, drawing a large crowd. Special trains named Sholakia Express facilitated travel for devotees. In Dinajpur, a major congregation was held at Gor-e-Shahid Boro Maidan.
Dhaka University hosted two Eid Jamaats at its central mosque, while similar gatherings were organized countrywide. Following prayers, devotees commenced the ritual of animal sacrifice, which will continue on the second day of Eid.
Efforts to manage sacrificial waste began in Dhaka, with city corporations urging residents to assist in the clean-up. Security measures were in place to maintain order throughout the country. Media outlets have been airing special Eid programming, which will continue for several days.
High-profile meetings occurred as military leaders met with Chief Adviser Professor Yunus. The government ensured CNG filling stations remained open during Eid to facilitate travel. With many people traveling to their hometowns, Dhaka’s streets appeared unusually quiet.
