Riyadh: Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul today urged the global community, particularly the International Labour Organization (ILO), to play a broader role in reducing the health hazards and social risks faced by migrant workers employed in undocumented and informal sectors worldwide.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Nazrul made these remarks while participating as a panel discussant at the 7th Global Occupational Safety and Health Conference (GOSH7) held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last Saturday. He highlighted the limitations faced by developing countries, such as a lack of resources, skilled manpower, and advanced technology, which hinder the protection of migrant workers.

Dr. Nazrul identified the absence of research and innovative initiatives, the reluctance of influential individuals or groups to implement occupational health and safety laws, and the weak enforcement of these laws as major challenges. He reiterated his commitment to expanding sustainable employment opportunities by linking education and industry, and ensuring the occupational health and welfare of migrant workers.
