Narsingdi: Two young girls drowned in a pond while taking a bath at Sonakura in Shibpur upazila of the district. The tragic incident occurred today and claimed the lives of Soha Akhter, 10, daughter of Abul Kashem from Sonakura village, and her cousin, Habiba Akhter, 9, daughter of Bablu from Daulatpur village in Monohardi upazila.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, family sources reported that Habiba, who was visiting her uncle’s house, went to the nearby pond with her cousin Soha to bathe at noon. Unfortunately, both girls drowned during the outing.
Locals quickly responded to the emergency and rescued the girls, rushing them to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex. However, the efforts were in vain as the on-duty doctor declared them dead upon arrival, stated M. Afzal Hossain, Officer-In-Charge of Shibpur Police Station.
The Officer-In-Charge suggested that the incident might have occurred because the girls did not know how to swim, leading to the unfortunate accident in the pond.
