Dhaka: The interim government in Bangladesh is set to establish a dedicated and powerful trade negotiating body to address the impending trade challenges as the country prepares for its graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status in November 2026, announced Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Dr Anisuzzaman Chowdhury today. “The work of forming a powerful trade negotiating body began today. The trade negotiating body, headed by a senior official of the government, will be constituted soon,” Dr Chowdhury stated at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the special assistant briefed reporters following a meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and experts on the LDC graduation. The meeting took place at the Chief Adviser’s Office, focusing on Bangladesh’s preparedness for the transition. Dr Chowdhury expressed satisfaction with the country’s preparations and mentioned the formation of a committee involving experts and representatives from various sectors to monitor the situation.
Dr Chowdhury highlighted that a list has been compiled of the challenges Bangladesh will face post-LDC graduation. He expressed confidence that Bangladesh will navigate the graduation process smoothly, dismissing calls to delay the graduation as irrational. He also noted the government’s efforts to mobilize domestic resources and implement policy measures to address potential challenges arising from the graduation.
In response to questions, Dr Chowdhury downplayed concerns about the Ready-Made Garments (RMG) sector facing turbulence, assuring that Bangladesh will continue to enjoy facilities from different countries. He emphasized that precautionary measures will be implemented to ensure a seamless transition from LDC status, identifying governance as a significant challenge in the process.
The press briefing was also attended by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder. Bangladesh’s scheduled graduation to a developing nation status marks a significant milestone in its economic development journey.
