Paikgachha: The government has initiated a significant step by distributing free jute seeds to farmers in Paikgachha upazila, an effort aimed at boosting the cultivation of jute using advanced technology. This initiative, launched on Wednesday, is part of the “Production and Expansion of Jute and Jute Seeds Using Advanced Technology” project spearheaded by the Department of Jute under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the program was jointly organized by the Upazila Administration and the Department of Jute with the objective of increasing jute production and contributing to the economic prosperity of farmers. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahera Nazneen inaugurated the event at the upazila parishad premises, underscoring the government’s commitment to revitalizing the jute industry, historically known as Bangladesh’s golden fiber.
In her address, Mahera Nazneen highlighted the interim government’s efforts to restore the jute sector by reopening jute mills that had been shut down, particularly in the Khulna region. This move is part of a broader strategy to bring back the golden era of jute.
Initially, the distribution of jute seeds began with farmers from Gadaipur union. In total, 1,900 jute farmers across the unions of Haridhali, Kapilmuni, Gadaipur, Raduli, and Chandkhali are set to benefit from this initiative. The event was attended by various officials, including Upazila assistant commissioner (Land) Md. Iftekharul Islam Shamim, assistant agriculture extension officer Md. Shahjahan Ali, and sub-assistant jute development officer Aniruddha Kumar Baidya, alongside the beneficiary jute farmers.
