Dhaka: Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain stated that the proper collection and distribution of zakat could eradicate poverty in Bangladesh within ten years. He made this assertion during a discussion held at Bangladesh Bank's central mosque in the city, marking the holy month of Ramadan.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Khalid emphasized the potential financial impact if all wealthy individuals in Bangladesh contributed zakat. He mentioned that it is possible to raise Tk 1 lakh crore annually through this means. He further highlighted the need for a cultural shift, urging people to prioritize hard-earned money over wealth accumulation.
Addressing financial misconduct, Dr Khalid called for accountability and legal action against those who have misappropriated state resources. He questioned the exorbitant procurement prices of everyday items like pillows and bed sheets, suggesting these reflect deeper systemic issues.
Dr Khalid also drew comparisons with developed countries, where public trust and integrity prevent the misuse of wealth. He stressed the importance of changing the mindset in Bangladesh to reflect these values.
Urging businesses to maintain price stability during Ramadan, he warned against exploiting consumers for profit. He called on central bank officials to lead lives free from interest and bribery, underscoring the moral and ethical obligations of financial stewardship.
