Dhaka: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has announced that Elon Musk’s Starlink is being launched in Bangladesh to permanently end the practice of online shutdowns. Alam shared this information through a post on his verified Facebook account, highlighting the significance of this development in the country’s digital landscape.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam emphasized that the initiative aims to counteract the frequent internet shutdowns imposed during Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year rule. These shutdowns have been used as a tool by governments to suppress protests and opposition movements. Alam pointed out that such actions have adversely affected hundreds of thousands of freelancers, with some losing their contracts and jobs permanently.
Alam further stated that the entry of Starlink into the Bangladesh market would ensure that future governments cannot completely shut down internet access. He added that businesses such as BPO firms, call centers, and freelancers would no longer suffer from attempts to disrupt internet connectivity.
