Dhaka: A court here today showed former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun arrested in a case filed over the killing of one Sabbir Hossain during the student-led July-August mass uprising. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masuma Rahman passed the order as police produced the former IGP before the court and pleaded to show him arrested in the case.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the case documents reveal that Sabbir took part in a peaceful rally of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the Ravindra Swarani area in Uttara Sector-7 on July 18. Suddenly, goons of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies attacked the agitators, firing indiscriminately at them. Sabbir was shot in the throat.
He was rushed to Uttara Crescent Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead. Sabbir's father, Amod Ali, filed the case with Uttara West Police Station on September 19.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was arrested by a team of the detective branch (DB) of police on September 3. He has already been shown arrested in many cases lodged over murder and attempted murder that took place during the July-August mass uprising.
