Dhaka: The government is expressing optimism regarding the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India, as confirmed by Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy this evening.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shafiqul Alam emphasized the collective desire of the nation to see Hasina returned to face trial. He expressed hope that the next elected government would continue the efforts initiated by the interim administration, as this remains a significant issue for future generations. Alam stressed the government's commitment to exerting continuous international pressure to achieve this goal.
Addressing questions about the feasibility of extraditing Hasina during the interim government's tenure, Alam reiterated the importance of collaboration with political parties, which are considered stakeholders in the matter. He highlighted that global awareness of Hasina's alleged misdeeds could generate additional pressure for her extradition, noting that no nation shelters individuals accused of such serious offenses.
Alam recounted the severity of Hasina's alleged wrongdoings, including incidents from the January 5 polls and the July-August massacre, and underscored the government's resolve to bring her to trial. In response to inquiries about communication with India, he stated that there has been no response from the Indian side yet regarding the extradition request, but emphasized that efforts to facilitate Hasina's return remain a top priority for the government.
