DHAKA: Expressing his heartfelt condolences over the passing of Nobel Laureate and former US President Jimmy Carter, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus stated that President Carter was a true friend of Bangladesh. Prof. Yunus highlighted Carter’s commitment to human rights and democracy, which resonated deeply with the people of Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof. Yunus conveyed his condolences through a message to US President Joseph R. Biden. He praised Carter as a remarkable leader and champion of peace across the globe, noting that during Carter’s presidency and beyond, the relationship between Bangladesh and the United States was significantly strengthened.
Prof. Yunus acknowledged the impactful work of the Carter Center in Bangladesh, particularly in empowering women and advancing democracy. He fondly recalled Carter’s visit to Bangladesh in 1986, describing it as a source of inspiration for the nation. The 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate emphasized the deep personal connection he shared with Carter, recalling their numerous meetings at Nobel Laureates’ gatherings and Carter’s steadfast commitment to social justice.
The chief adviser expressed the hope that Carter’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations. On behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, he extended condolences to the people of the United States and Carter’s family, while offering prayers for the salvation of Carter’s soul.
