DHAKA: A court in Dhaka has placed Md Muktadir Rashid Mukto, a central leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), on a two-day remand in connection with a case involving the assault of students at Dhaka University during an anti-discrimination protest on July 15. The remand order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman after police requested a 10-day remand.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mukto was apprehended by local residents in front of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on December 21 and subsequently handed over to law enforcement authorities. The case documents allege that members of the BCL, Jubo League, and Awami League violently attacked protesting students on the Dhaka University campus, resulting in injuries to more than 300 students.
Following the attack, Dhaka University student Arman Hossain filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station, accusing 220 individuals of attempted murder in connection with the incident. The case highlights the involvement of political groups in the violence and has sparked widespread concern regarding campus safety and political interference in student movements.
