Dhaka: A court here today sent former senior secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Mohibul Haque, to jail in a case lodged over the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman passed the order as police produced him before the court and pleaded to place him on a five-day remand in the case. The defence, however, argued for his bail. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court decided to send the accused to jail after the main case documents were not presented during the hearing. The hearing is set to be held at a later date. Mohibul Haque was apprehended in the Mohakhali DOHS area at approximately 11 pm on November 20. Case documents reveal that the BNP had organized a rally in the capital's Naya Paltan area on October 28, 2023. In response, the then-ruling Awami League organized a counter-rally on the same day in the capital. The Awami League supporters, reportedly with the assistance of law enforcement agencies, attacked the BNP rally, resulting in the death of Shamim Mollah and injuring many leaders and activists. The case was filed against 704 individuals, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, on September 24, 2024.
