Verdict on Death References of August 21 Grenade Attack Cases Expected Soon.

Dhaka: The High Court (HC) is poised to deliver its verdict at any time on the death references and appeals related to the August 21 grenade attack cases. These cases stem from the 2004 attack on an opposition party rally in Dhaka, which led to significant legal proceedings and convictions. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain has reviewed the death references, which are trial court documents required for confirming death sentences, and the appeals filed by the convicted individuals. The bench has now reserved its judgment after concluding the appeal hearings. The hearings on the death references and appeals commenced at the High Court on October 31 of this year. In a previous judgment by a speedy trial tribunal in October 2018, 19 individuals, including former state minister for home affairs Lutfuzzaman Babor, were sentenced to death for their involvement in the grenade attack. Additionally, the court sentenced anoth er 19 individuals to life imprisonment in connection with the cases.
