Dhaka: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has stayed a High Court order that had granted bail to the former additional attorney general, Mohammad Mehedi Hassan Chowdhury, in connection with a murder case linked to the mass uprising that occurred between July and August. The order, issued by the full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, stipulates that the stay will remain in effect until the filing of a regular leave petition. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court's decision came in response to a petition filed by the state challenging the earlier High Court ruling. Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman and Additional Attorney General Aneek Rushd Haque represented the state in this matter, while senior lawyer Joynul Abedin, Barrister Kaisar Kamal, and Advocate Gazi Qamrul Islam Sazal argued on behalf of the Supreme Court Bar Council. Senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna also participated in the hearing, providing legal support for the former additional attor ney general. The High Court had previously granted a six-month bail to Chowdhury on November 19. However, the state contested this decision, leading to the recent intervention by the Appellate Division. Mohammad Mehedi Hassan Chowdhury was detained by police on September 20 while allegedly attempting to flee to India. Subsequently, he was formally arrested in connection with the murder case. Chowdhury had resigned from his position as additional attorney general on August 8.
