Bhola and Satkhira: Different non-government and volunteer organizations in Bhola and Satkhira districts today formed separate human chains, demanding the declaration of November 12 as 'Coast Day'. They aim to promote progress and protection for climate-threatened populations in coastal areas and to commemorate the victims of the catastrophic floods and cyclones of the 1970s. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, in Bhola, Youth Power in Bangladesh and Coast Foundation organized a human chain at the Bhola Press Club premises, followed by a discussion meeting. The event, chaired by Alhaj Shawkat Hossain, editor of Daily Ajker Bhola, and conducted by journalist Shahriar Jhelan, highlighted the need for November 12 to be recognized as 'Coast Day'. The speakers emphasized the significant contributions coastal populations make to the national economy, despite nearly 50 million coastal residents facing increasing risks due to adverse climate change. They argued that recognizing 'Coast Day' would enhance the im portance of coastal issues in government, development aid organizations, and media. In Satkhira, a human chain was formed at 11 am in front of the Shyamnagar Press Club by the Sundarbans Students' Solidarity Team, Sabuj Saghati, Upazila Youth Volunteer Coordination Committee, and Barsik, a private research institute. The speakers underscored the coastal area's vital role in the country's economic development, food security, biodiversity, and environmental protection, stressing the need for greater recognition and importance. They advocated for 'Coast Day' on November 12 to ensure justice for coastal communities, as one-third of the country is bordered by the coast.
