Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has cautioned that although the students-led mass uprising has resulted in a significant political change, potential dangers remain. Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized by Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal at the Jatiya Press Club on the occasion of November 7, he emphasized the need for vigilance against looming threats to democracy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul urged attendees to remain alert, warning that conspiracies to undermine democracy could resurface. He expressed his hope for the interim government to swiftly undertake necessary reforms and conduct elections, stressing that an elected government, which operates with the people’s mandate, is the most effective form of governance. He reiterated the importance of elections as a pathway to democracy.

Reflecting on the significance of National Revolution and Solidarity Day, the BNP secretary general highlighted the pivotal role of
the November 7 revolt. He credited soldiers and common people for entrusting the responsibility of the nation to the late President Ziaur Rahman, whose leadership, he said, united the nation during a divided period, offering a renewed sense of hope and aspiration.

Criticizing the Awami League’s governance, Mirza Fakhrul accused them of oppressive tactics that dismantled the political and economic framework of the country, citing increased corruption and bank robberies. He acknowledged the mass uprising’s success in overcoming the oppressive regime through the determination of students.

He further cautioned about the challenges ahead, underscoring the formation of an interim government tasked with implementing reforms and organizing elections. He expressed optimism that these measures would counter the damages inflicted during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.

BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Tahsina Rushdie Luna, attending as a special guest, underscored the responsibility to educate the current generation o
n the true history of the November 7 Soldiers-People’s Revolution. She lamented the dissemination of incorrect historical narratives for nearly two decades.

Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal President Afroza Abbas praised Tarique Rahman for inspiring youth during the uprising, expressing hope for a new Bangladesh under the leadership of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Deshanayak Tarique Rahman. The event, moderated by Mahila Dal’s General Secretary Sultana Ahmed, also featured speeches by other Mahila Dal leaders and was attended by activists from across the country.
