Sherpur: The Forest Department detained a man and seized a generator and some electric cables in connection with the death of a wild elephant in Batkuchi Tilapara area of Madhutila Eco Park near Nalitabari border in Sherpur on Friday, said the authorities. The wild animal died after being electrocuted on Thursday night, officials said.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Sherpur forest department’s Assistant Conservator Md Sadekul Islam Khan confirmed the incident and stated that the elephant was aged around 10 to 12 years. It is set to be buried following an autopsy. Authorities have identified 10 to 12 individuals believed to be involved in the incident and are preparing to take legal action under the Wildlife (Preservation and Security) Act-2012.
The unfortunate event unfolded on Thursday night when locals discovered the deceased elephant in the Batkuchi Tilapara area. It was electrocuted while descending from the hills in search of food. This incident is part of a larger issue where a herd of approx
imately 40 to 50 elephants has been coming down from the hills to raid the Aman paddy fields in the border villages of Nalitabari over several days.
Farmers, in an attempt to protect their crops, have been employing various methods to drive away the elephants. On Thursday evening, another group of elephants approached from the hills as farmers set up an electrical connection wire from a generator in the field to deter them.
