Hathazari: Fisheries department in a drive seized 6,700 meters of illegal fishing net (charghera net) from the river Halda, a natural fish breeding ground, in the district on Monday. A team of the department conducted a drive at Ramdas Munsir Hat in Hathazari upazila and seized the nets setting up in the river for fishing, said upazila senior fisheries officer Aminul Islam.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation is part of ongoing efforts to develop, conserve, and protect the natural fish breeding grounds of the Halda River. The team from the fisheries department actively seeks to eliminate illegal fishing practices that threaten the sustainability of this vital ecosystem. Upazila senior fisheries officer Aminul Islam emphasized the importance of preserving the river's biodiversity and ensured that similar operations would continue in the future.
The Halda River is recognized as a significant breeding ground for various species of fish, and maintaining its ecological balance is crucial for the local fishing community. The seized nets, known as charghera nets, are specifically prohibited due to their potential to disrupt the breeding activities in the river, impacting fish populations negatively.
