Dhaka: The 58-day fishing ban in the Bay of Bengal, imposed by the government, is set to commence tomorrow. This initiative aims to facilitate the proper breeding, production, preservation, and collection of marine fisheries, ensuring the sustainable management of marine resources.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock issued a gazette notification confirming the ban, which will be in effect until June 11. The notification aligns with the marine fisheries rules of 2023, stipulating that all fishing vessels must cease operations during this period. This annual restriction is intended to promote the breeding and preservation of fish stocks within Bangladesh’s maritime zone.
The government has also implemented a specific ban in the coastal district of Bhola and its surrounding areas in the Bay of Bengal. This measure, effective from April 15 to June 11, aims to enhance the conservation efforts in these critical fishing areas.
In order to mitigate the impact on local fishing communities, the government will provide aid to affected fishermen. Each registered fisherman in the district will receive 78 kg of rice during the ban period. This support is crucial for the approximately 65,000 sea-going fishermen in Bhola who will suspend their fishing activities.
To ensure compliance with the ban, a joint task force composed of the Coast Guard, Navy, and the Department of Fisheries will conduct regular patrols in the coastal area. This enforcement effort is essential for maintaining the integrity of the ban and protecting marine resources during the critical breeding season.
