Mortal remains of Nembang to be placed at Chyasal till1:00 pm today

The CPN (UML) has made arrangements for paying tributes to its Vice Chair Subash Chandra Nembang within the party central office from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm today. The leader passed away on Tuesday following a cardiac arrest at the age of 71.

According to UML publicity department secretary, Gagan Bista, the mortal remains of the leader are to be kept within the party central office at Chyasal in Lalitpur till 1:00 pm today before taking the body to his residence in Baluwatar. There, family members, his relatives, and friends will time to pay their respects to the late leader.

The arrival of his sons from abroad is awaited for the performance of his last rights which have been scheduled 11:00 am tomorrow, Thursday with State honours at the Pashupati Aryaghat.

In honor of the late leader, the party has decided to observe three days of mourning and lower the party flag to half-mast during this period.---

RSP saddened by passing of leader Nembang

The Rastriya Swotantra Party (RSP) has said the role of Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairperson and former Speaker, Subash Chandra Nembang, in Nepal's democratic movement is unforgettable.

Issuing a press note on the demise of leader Nembang on Tuesday, party general secretary and spokesperson Dr Mukul Dhakal said the party was shocked at untimely passing of the leader who had played a leading role in the historic Constitution-making process.

The party has extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and relatives, wishing for eternal peace to the departed soul.

The party on Tuesday postponed all its scheduled programmes on the demise of Nembang and urged party members and officials to not organise any programmes on the day scheduled for conducting his last rites. ---

Libyan flood kills at least six Bangladeshis

At least six Bangladeshi expatriates were killed and several others went missing as international media reports suggest the catastrophe claimed over 5,000 people while hospital morgues overwhelmed in the north African country amid searches for thousands others.

“According to the latest information we received, six Bangladeshi expatriates living in Derna town were killed” in the cyclonic storm followed by dam collapses,” foreign ministry’s spokesperson Seheli Sabrin told newsmen this evening.

She added the officials assumed several other Bangladeshis were missing following the Mediterranean storm Daniel that hit on eastern Libya on Sunday last.

The spokesperson said four of the six dead were detected so far and they were identified as Shaheen and Sujan from Rajbari; and Mamun and Shihab from Narayanganj.

She said Bangladesh embassy in Libya is keeping continuous contact with concerned Libyan authorities alongside Bangladeshi community and local and international organisations engaged in rescue campaign for information regarding the missing ones.

The embassy was also overseeing the situations of the Bangladeshi community living in the devastated areas.

The Bangladesh mission requested all to contact Bangladesh embassy’s first secretary (labour) Md Russel Mia (mobile no +218918580989) to inform about missing Bangladeshis as well as to know information of affected Bangladeshi nationals in Libya.

Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Derna, Sahat, Al-Mari, and Jabel Al-Akhdar towns in eastern Libya were severely affected by the Daniel.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, meanwhile, ordered steps to send relief materials as humanitarian aid to the people of eastern Libya those have been severely affected by the Cyclone Daniel and flooding.

The foreign ministry said a C-130 aircraft carrying relief materials, including medicines and dry food, for the flood-affected people of Libya is expected to be transported from Dhaka as soon as possible.

Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen has expressed condolence and sympathy to Libyan government following the deadly storm.

PM conveys condolences over loss of lives in Libya’s devastating storm

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deepest condolences to the victims and missing lives of Libya due to Mediterranean Storm Daniel.

In a letter to Libya's Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Mohamed Al-Dabaiba, she wrote: "On behalf of the People and Government of Bangladesh and on my own behalf, I express my deepest condolences for the loss of a large number of lives and the massive destruction of property and means of subsistence caused by the devastating Mediterranean Storm Daniel that struck eastern Libya, specifically Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Derna, Sahat, Al-Mari and Jabel Al-Akhdar region".

"We pray to the Almighty for the eternal peace of the departed souls," she said, according to a press release of the Prime Minister's Press Wing.

"My heart goes out to extend the most profound sympathies to the victims' families and those, whose nearest and dearest went missing," said Sheikh Hasina, adding, "We've taken steps to send a humble contribution from the People of Bangladesh to the Libyan People affected by the disaster."

She ended that "We laud the well-coordinated relief and rehabilitation efforts of the Government of Libya and your concerted approach to coping with the dire situation".

CAAB withdraw 10 personnel as minor sneaks security checking at HSIA

Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB)

today withdrew 10 officials and staffs as a minor boy managed to board a

flight of Kuwait Airlines without passport and boarding pass after dodging

the security at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at the early hour of

Tuesday.

Besides, a five-member probe body was also formed to investigate the whole

incident, CAAB Chairman Air vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman told media today.

Group Captain Abu Saleh Mahmud Mannafi, Member (Security), CAAB will lead the

five-member probe body.

Proper legal steps will be taken after getting the probe report, the CAAB

chief said.

Meanwhile, CAAB in a press release said the child aged around 12 primarily

seemed mentally imbalance.

"By giving false information and mixing with the group passengers due to his

age, the boy managed to get inside the aircraft avoiding the attention of the

duty staff. Such an incident at an important place like an airport is

unexpected, undesirable and sad," said the release.

A 12-year-old boy managed to evade all checks and board a Kuwait-bound plane

at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early Tuesday.

The runaway boy from Gopalganj district had no passport, ticket or boarding

card. He was discovered only because he got on a completely sold-out flight,

according to airport police.

He was then handed over to the Airport Police Station.

The minor boy was handed over to his uncle Md Yusuf today who brought him to

their village home-Gopalganj.

Hasan mourns film director Sohanoor Rahman Sohan’s death

Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud today expressed profound Shock and sorrow at the death renowned film director Sohanoor Rahman Sohan.

In a message of condolence, the minister said it is an irreparable loss to the film industry. He will ever be remembered through his some groundbreaking films including 'Keyamot Theke Keyamot', 'Swajan', 'Amar Ghor Amar Behesth', and 'Anonto Bhalobasha'.

Dr Hasan prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Sohan died of a heart attack today day after the demise of his wife.

Salman urges entrepreneurs of commonwealth countries to invest in IT

Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment

Adviser Salman F Rahman today urged the entrepreneurs of commonwealth

countries to invest in Bangladesh's different sectors, including agriculture,

industry and information technology (IT).

"Bangladesh is ready to facilitate special policy support for Commonwealth

economies to fetch more foreign direct investment (FDI)," he said while

speaking at a seminar on 'The Bangladesh Opportunity-Commonwealth

Partnerships' at a hotel in the city.

He said, "Bangladesh is well positioned country among the Global South

economies. Besides, Bay of Bengal is emerging as a critical region in the

competition for control of sea lanes and global trade. Economies under

umbrella of Commonwealth can leverage the opportunities for trade or setting

manufacturing unites."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated the Commonwealth Trade and

Investment Forum as the chief guest at Bangabandhu International Conference

Centre (BICC) in the city.

Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Ministry of Foreign

Affairs and Zi Foundation are partners of conference. Over 300 international

delegates including 13 ministers from Commonwealth countries are

participating in the two-day conference.

In his speech, Salman mentioned that Bangladesh's strategic location at the

apex of the Bay of Bengal brings significant responsibilities as a

facilitator and connector between regions and competing powers.

"Bangladesh economy is expected to reach top 485 American dollars by the end

of this year. A robust demographic dividend, strong apparel exports,

resilient remittance inflows, and stable macroeconomic conditions have

supported rapid economic growth over the past one decade," he added.

There was presented an overview of Bangladesh and investment opportunities in

the economy with immense potentials of growth towards the 2041 strategic

goal.

In opening remark, CWEIC Chairman Lord Marland said Bangladesh can take

opportunity to extend economic cooperation among Commonwealth nations.

"Bangladesh has proven its excellence in apparel export in the world.

Countries under Commonwealth platform can follow the best practices in the

sectors. We want to connect every dot of possibilities through Commonwealth,

home to 2.5 billion people and includes both advanced economies and

developing countries," Marland said.

National Identity Registration Bill, 2023 passed in Parliament

The National Identity Registration

Bill, 2023, today passed in Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday to transfer the

national identity registration operation from the Election Commission to the

Security Services Division of the home ministry.

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan moved the bill which was unanimously passed by

voice votes in the House with Deputy Speaker Shamsul Huq Tuku in the chair.

As per the bill, the NID registration operation will be under the Security

Services Division of the home ministry.

Immediately after the birth, every national shall have the right to get a

birth certificate or a unique number, which will remain unchangeable.

The Election Commission will prepare the voter list for nationals aged above

18 years.

If a citizen, for the purpose of obtaining a national identity card,

intentionally or knowingly furnishes any false information or conceals

information, the individual could be imprisoned for one year, fined up to

Taka 20,000, or given both punishments, according to the bill.

A similar punishment can be given for knowingly using more than one NID card.

Anyone involved in the NID issue process could be jailed for up to seven

years and fined Taka 1 lakh for intentionally defacing or destroying any

information relating to NID cards, according to the bill.

Any person distorting or destroying any information mentioned in the NID card

for dishonest purposes would be jailed for a maximum of two years or fined

Taka 40,000, or they could be given both punishments as per the bill.

For unauthorized access to data or illegal use of data, the bill stipulates a

maximum jail sentence of five years or a fine of up to Taka 50,000 or both.

Unauthorized disclosure of information will invite similar punishment,

according to the bill.

The bill also made forging a national identity card or knowingly carrying

such a card punishable by seven years in jail, Taka 1 lakh in fine, or both.

Assisting such forgery was made equally punishable.

Any person possessing or carrying the national identity card of another

citizen without reasonable cause was also made punishable in the bill for one

year in jail, Taka 20,000 in fine, or both.

The EC has been conducting the national identity registration operation and

issuing national identity cards to citizens aged 18 or above since 2007, as

per the National Identity Registration Act, 2010.

Govt earmarks Tk 600 crore for agricultural incentive in current 2023-24 fiscal

Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur

Razzaque today said the government has earmarked Taka 600 crore for the

agricultural incentive sector in the current 2023-24 fiscal year.

"The government has kept Taka 600 crore for providing incentives to the

farmers to increase agricultural production in the country", said the

minister while responding to query which was tabled at the Jatiya Sangsad

here and it was raised by treasury bench lawmaker M Shahiduzzaman Sarker of

Naogon-2.

In 2022-23, the government has provided Taka 500 crore aiming to encourage

and providing agricultural assistance to the farmers through agricultural

incentive and agriculture rehabilitation programme to enhance the

agricultural output.

Around 67.65 lakh farmers were benefitted from the incentives, he told the

parliament with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Under the current agricultural incentive and rehabilitation programme, Taka

over 209 crore has already been disbursed among the farmers for cultivating

different crops including Black gram, summer onion, wheat, Maize, Mustard,

sunflower, peanuts, soya bean, winter onion, Mung bean, lentil and Khesari

Dal.

Over 20 lakh farmers already have been benefitted with the programme.

Noted film director Sohanoor Rahman Sohan passes away

Renowned film director Sohanoor Rahman Sohan

passed way at the capital's Crescent hospital here this evening.

He was 64.

Sohan, mostly recognized for his famous film "Keyamot Theke Keyamot",

breathed his last in his sleep at his residence.

He was taken to the hospital around 6.41 pm where the on-duty doctor declared

him dead, hospital sources said.

The film director died just after the demise of his wife yesterday.

Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint

General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud expressed profound Shock and sorrow at the

death renowned film director Sohanoor Rahman Sohan.

Muhammad Shaheen Imran, deputy commissioner and district magistrate of Cox’s Bazar, formally inaugurated the three-day meet as the chief guest, organized by Bangladesh Volleyball Federation.

Cox’s Bazar police super Md Mahfuzul Islam was present as the special guest in the opening ceremony.
