Five to die in constable Badal murder case

A Dhaka court today convicted and sentenced five people to death in a case lodged over the murder of police constable Badal Miah in the capital's Motijheel area in 2013.

Dhaka 7th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Tehsin Iftekhar pronounced the judgement, also fined them Taka one lakh each.

The five death-row-convicts are- Ripon Nath Ghosh, Bishwajit Chandra Das, Ibrahim Khalil alias Kosai Khalil, Ratan Chandra Das and Humayun Kabir.

The court also sentenced them to seven-year imprisonment each under another section for their involvement in hiding the body.

Of the five convicts, Bishwajit, Ibrahim and Ratan were present during the pronouncement of the judgment and were sent to jail with conviction warrant.

According to the case documents, police recovered the unidentified body of a youth from T&T Colony area in Motijheel on February 22, 2013. Later it was identified as police constable Badal Miah. Then Motijheel Police Station sub-inspector Abdul Latif filed the case over the incident.

JS budget session resumes

The 23rd budget session of the Jatiya Sangsad for 2023-2024 fiscals began at 5.02 pm today with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

The day's proceedings began with recitation from the Holy Quran.

Month-long summer vacation at RU from tomorrow

A month-long vacation for summer and Eid-Ul-

Adha at Rajshahi University (RU) will begin from tomorrow (Wednesday).

Academic classes will remain suspended during the vacation that will continue

until July 6, said a notice, signed by Professor Abdus Salam, Registrar of

the RU, today.

However, offices of the university will remain closed from June 11 to 15 for

summer and from June 25 to July 5 for Eid-Ul-Adha, the notice added.

But, only the emergency services, including water, power supply, treatment,

security and telephone, will remain functioning as usual.

Apart from this, emergency offices of Vice-chancellor (VC), Pro-VCs,

Treasurer, Registrar, students' dormitories, students' adviser, proctor and

public relation will perform roster duties with limited manpower from 9am to

12noon from June 25 to July 5.

Monthly Disability allowance to go up to Tk 850

Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed today said the government has increased the monthly disability allowance by Taka 100 - from Taka 750 to Taka 850 in this current fiscal.

The minister said this while responding to a query made by Jatiya Party lawmaker M Mujibul Huq of Kishorganj-3 at the question-answer session which was tabled in the budget session of 2023-24 fiscal at the Jatiya Sangsad with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

The monthly disability allowance under the social security programme has been increased to Taka 850 from the previous amount of Taka 750 in this fiscal (2022-23), said the minister.

3 to die for killing man in Magura

A court here today sentenced three people to death in a case filed over killing farmer Saheb Ali in Shalikha upazila of the district in 2002.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Farzana Yasmin pronounced the verdict this afternoon.

The death convicts are - Abdus Sabur, son of Samshuddin Mandal, resident of Courtvag village of Shalikha upazila, Habibur Rahman, son of Gahar Munsi, resident of the same village, Bulu Miah, son of Emanuddin of the same village.

According to the details of the case, in the morning of March 8, 2002, Sahib Ali and his father Amjad Ali were going to their own crop fields in Kotbhag village for agricultural work. On the way, when they reached the local primary school ground area, accused Abdus Sabur, Habibur Rahman, Bulu Miah and others stopped their movement. Saheb Ali was brutally killed with a rod and a sharp weapon and blade.

Saheb Ali's father Amjad Ali filed a case with Shalikha police station accusing 36 people including Abdus Sabur.

Later, police submitted a charge sheet against the accused in this case.

After examining the record and witnesses, the court found three of them guilty, 32 accused have been acquitted. One of the accused named Zakir Hussain has already died.

Additional public prosecutor (APP) Advocate Moshiar Rahman confirmed the matter.
