Mongla port: The second largest sea port in the country, Mongla Port, witnessed the anchoring of 171 overseas commercial ships in the last two and a half months, boosting its revenue earnings. Of the ships, 12 carried 8,514 TEUs containers, while 6 ships imported 2,118 different brand cars. A total of 18.02 lakh tonnes of goods were transported from July 1, 2025, to September 21, 2025.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, several measures have been taken to increase ship arrivals at Mongla Port during the interim government. Presently, 153 foreign ships carrying fertilizers, clinker, LPG, coal, and stone remain anchored at permanent anchorage points of the port jetties and Boya of Harbaria, Base Creek, Sundori Kota, and Mooring Boya point, stated Muhammad Makruzzaman, Deputy Director (Public Relations) of the Mongla Port Authority (MPA).
Makruzzaman emphasized that Mongla Port is a key driver of economic development in the southwestern region of Bangladesh, citing that it has created hundreds of thousands of jobs. The port plays a vital role in fulfilling the country’s demand by importing various goods, including food grains, raw materials for cement production, clinker, fertilizers, automobiles, machinery, rice, wheat, coal, oil, stone, corn, oilseeds, and LPG gas. Additionally, the port exports fish, shrimp, jute and jute products, frozen food, crabs, clay tiles, silk cloth, and general cargo.
He further mentioned the ongoing construction of seven development projects at the port, aimed at enhancing its capacity. The port is experiencing an increase in ship arrivals and a rising number of imported and exported goods. The import of reconditioned cars through Mongla Port has increased, as importers are now more inclined to bring cars into the country through this port.
Makruzzaman added that upon successful implementation of the ongoing projects, Mongla Port will be transformed into an eco-friendly and business-friendly port in the global arena.
