BGB member killing during UP-polls: Prime accused held

The prime accused in a case over the killing of a Border Guard Bangladesh(BGB) member during third phase UP-polls at Garagram union in Nilphamari district was arrested on Monday night.

The arrestee was identified as Md Maruf Hossain alias Auntik, son of Mosaddek Hossain who was chairman of the Union Parishad for 19 years.

After his father’s death in 2017, Maruf was elected the UP chairman.

In November 28, this year during the vote counting at Pashcim Daliram Majhpara Government School polling center BGB member Nayek Rubel Hossain was killed during a clash.

Upon the complaint of Presiding Officer of the center Lalit Chandra, a murder case was filed at the Kishorganj police station accusing 95 people and some more anonymous people.

During a drive of Rapid Action Battalion-4 (Rab) on Monday night in Ashulia area of Dhaka accused Maruf was arrested.

During primary interrogation, accused Maruf reportedly confessed to planning an attack on the day of election at the center to capture it.

He said he did it to win the election by securing all votes, said Rab-4 in a press release.
