Dhaka: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter emphasized today that the National Zoo should not be seen merely as a source of revenue or entertainment. 'Zoos can become a symbol of the country's special identity,' she stated, highlighting the potential cultural significance of these institutions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Farida Akhter made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop titled 'Current Status and Development Plan of Bangladesh National Zoo.' The event was held at the Bangladesh Cotton Development Board's hall in the capital's Farmgate area. The workshop was organized by the Bangladesh National Zoo Authority.
The Fisheries and Livestock Adviser pointed out that the challenges faced by the zoo cannot be resolved by any single individual, not even by the Director General or the Director alone, due to the longstanding nature of these issues. She stressed the need for coordinated efforts involving all stakeholders, including the department, zoo officials, and university researchers, to address these challenges effectively.
Farida Akhter acknowledged the value of collective input, noting that many suggestions emerged from the workshop that would not have been possible through internal meetings alone. She proposed forming a committee that includes experienced individuals from various backgrounds to guide the zoo's development. Regular monthly meetings may be held to discuss and decide on necessary actions.
The Adviser also suggested expanding the scope of conservation efforts beyond the confines of the zoo. She raised the possibility of relocating some animals to suitable natural environments and deliberating on the fate of animals nearing the end of their natural lives.
She noted that research institutions often express interest in studying zoo animals. However, the Adviser made it clear that animals will not be sent outside the zoo for research purposes. Instead, researchers are encouraged to conduct their studies within the zoo's environment.
The meeting was presided over by Dr. Md. Abu Sufiun, Director General (In-Charge) of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), with Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber, attending as the special guest.
