Khulna: BNP leader Nazrul Islam Manju highlighted the pivotal role of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, in leading a directionless Bangladesh during a crucial period after its independence. Manju, who previously served as the president of Khulna City BNP and is the party’s candidate for the Khulna-2 constituency, delivered these remarks at a discussion held at the Khulna Press Club. The event, titled “Shaheed Zia in Protecting Independence, Sovereignty and Democracy,” was part of the celebrations marking the 90th birth anniversary of the BNP founder.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Manju described the post-independence period in Bangladesh as one of devastation, economic struggles, and political uncertainty. He emphasized that during this time, Ziaur Rahman emerged as a courageous leader, guiding the nation with discipline, confidence, and hope. Manju noted that Rahman viewed independence not just as a political victory but as a pathway to economic freedom and national pride, which drove him to focus on rural development, agricultural empowerment, job creation, and production-oriented growth.

The session was overseen by Khulna City BNP President and BNP National Executive Committee member Advocate Shafiqul Alam Mona. Former Khulna City Corporation mayor and freedom fighter Moniruzzaman Mony also addressed the gathering, recalling the historic moment in 1971 when Major Zia’s declaration from Chattogram inspired the people of Bangladesh during a time of national crisis.

Khulna City BNP General Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin provided a written presentation on Ziaur Rahman’s life and contributions, while Olama Dal leader Abu Naim conducted a Quran recitation. Poet Abdul Hai Sikder was scheduled to be the chief guest but was unable to attend due to illness, prompting attendees to pray for his swift recovery.
