Panchagarh: Shipping, Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (R.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain today emphasized the importance of casting a ‘Yes’ vote in the 2026 referendum, stating it is essential for meaningful change and advancing Bangladesh’s democratic transformation. The adviser made these remarks during a views-exchange meeting on the Referendum 2026 campaign at the Panchagarh Government Auditorium, organized by the district administration.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Sakhawat, speaking as the chief guest at the event, described the 2026 referendum as a historic opportunity in Bangladesh’s democratic journey. He highlighted that this referendum would enable citizens to directly express their opinions on key issues of state governance, thereby making democracy more participatory, transparent, and accountable.

Dr. Sakhawat emphasized that the referendum is not merely a procedural exercise but a true reflection of the people’s sovereign power. By ensuring direct public participation in major state decisions, the government aims to strengthen democratic practices on a solid foundation. He warned that a negative outcome could reverse the gains made since the July mass uprising, potentially returning the country to its previous autocratic system.

To achieve real change and empower the nation, Dr. Sakhawat urged citizens to vote ‘Yes’ in the referendum. He also stressed the importance of raising public awareness to ensure the success of the referendum, advocating for responsible, fact-based campaigns to communicate its true objectives to the people.

He called for coordinated efforts by the district administration, field-level government officials, public representatives, teachers, journalists, and members of civil society to support the referendum. Dr. Sakhawat assured that the referendum would be conducted under a clear legal and constitutional framework, ensuring transparency and neutrality at every stage so that public opinion is reflected freely and credibly.

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Sakhawat urged all citizens to act responsibly, stating that through Referendum 2026, people would not only cast votes but also become active stakeholders in shaping the future of the state. He praised the people of Panchagarh for their awareness and civic sense, expressing optimism that the district would play a leading role in making the referendum a success.

Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Kazi Md Sayemuzzaman chaired the meeting, which was attended by senior district administration officials, representatives from various government departments, public representatives, teachers, journalists, and people from different walks of life.
