DHAKA: A writ petition has been filed with the High Court aiming to prohibit the use of fireworks and the release of lanterns from rooftops during New Year’s Eve celebrations on December 31. The legal action seeks to curtail these activities to maintain public safety and reduce noise pollution.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ashrafuzzaman, a lawyer at the Bangladesh Supreme Court, initiated the writ petition. The Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), and Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have been named as respondents in the case. The petition calls for a ban on loudspeakers, fireworks, and lanterns between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. on the night of December 31.

The petition further requests a prohibition on public gatherings in open spaces and parks from 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, with the exception of the buying and selling of firecrackers. Advocate Ashrafuzzaman has also urged for mobile court operations to enforce the proposed regulations and address any violations of the bans.
