Dhaka:The country is observing World Habitat Day today, aligning with global efforts to advocate for well-planned housing for all.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the day is marked annually on the first Monday of October, as recognized by the United Nations, to reflect on urban conditions and the right to adequate shelter for everyone. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized the government's commitment to providing safe, affordable, environmentally friendly, and dignified housing, along with promoting planned, inclusive, and sustainable urbanization.
Various programs have been arranged by the government and different organizations to celebrate the day, including initiatives led by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. A 'Habitat Fair' is taking place at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, which Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to inaugurate. Additionally, a procession was planned from Zia Udyan to the event venue.
World Habitat Day aims to raise awareness of urbanization trends and the collective responsibility needed to enhance living environments and quality of life. The 2026 theme, 'Adequate Housing for All', seeks to highlight policies and solutions necessary for making this right a reality. The observance calls for inclusive approaches addressing the needs of lower-income households, homeless individuals, crisis-affected communities, and those at risk of displacement, emphasizing the importance of secure land tenure and diverse housing options.
The global observance of World Habitat Day 2026 is set to occur in Muscat, Oman, from October 5 to 8, coinciding with the Home and Building Expo and marking the start of urban October.
