Dhaka:World Habitat Day was observed in the country today, aligning with global celebrations, to advocate for well-planned housing for all. The United Nations recognizes this day, marked on the first Monday of October each year, as a time to consider the state of urban areas and the fundamental right to adequate shelter.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued a message on Sunday emphasizing the government's dedication to providing safe, affordable, environmentally friendly, and dignified housing for everyone. He highlighted the importance of planned, inclusive, and sustainable urban development as a priority for his administration.

In observance of the day, the government and various organizations organized several programs, with the Ministry of Housing and Public Works spearheading a number of initiatives. A 'Habitat Fair' took place at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, inaugurated by Prime Minister Rahman. Additionally, a procession started from Zia Udyan and ended at the conference centre.

World Habitat Day serves to enhance awareness of urbanization trends and the challenges associated with them, stressing the need for collective responsibility to foster improved living conditions. This year's theme, 'Adequate Housing for All', shines a spotlight on the necessary policies and partnerships to make this right a reality.

Adequate housing involves inclusive strategies that meet the requirements of lower-income households, the homeless, crisis-affected communities, and those at risk of displacement. It calls for secure land tenure and well-planned, well-serviced neighborhoods with diverse housing options, ensuring solutions are environmentally sustainable, climate-resilient, and culturally suitable.

The Global Observance of World Habitat Day 2026 is being held in Muscat, Oman, from October 5 to 8, coinciding with the Home and Building Expo, marking the beginning of urban October.
