Dhaka:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir expressed optimism that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit India under a proper bilateral framework at a convenient time. He emphasized the importance of maintaining bilateral engagement to strengthen relations between the two countries.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Kobir discussed the challenges in Bangladesh-India relations, expressing confidence that dialogue could address these issues. He highlighted the necessity of a conducive environment for the Prime Minister's visit but did not specify a timeline.
Kobir praised Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi for his efforts to understand Bangladesh's context, hoping that New Delhi would consider his insights. He also reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to a foreign policy based on strategic autonomy and national interest, ensuring open channels with international partners.
Regarding the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, due to expire in December 2026, Kobir stated that Bangladesh would seek to protect its national interests. Discussions with India are ongoing, and Bangladesh is awaiting a response from its Indian counterparts.
Kobir stressed the need for mutual restraint, expecting India to prevent activities from its territory that destabilize Bangladesh, while assuring that Bangladesh would reciprocate. He reaffirmed India's importance as a partner, advocating for regional cooperation and open dialogue to resolve differences.
The State Minister maintained that the government's foreign policy aims for strategic autonomy and engagement without compromising national interests, hoping to reach satisfactory solutions through positive discussions.
