Dinajpur: The World Environment Day-2025 was observed in various districts with a concerted effort to tackle plastic pollution under the theme “No more plastic pollution, now, it’s time to end it.” The districts marked the day with a series of events aimed at raising awareness and promoting environmental responsibility.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, in Dinajpur, the District Administration and the Department of Environment jointly hosted a rally, discussion, and award distribution ceremony. The rally, which displayed the slogan “No more plastic pollution – it’s time to stop it,” commenced from the Deputy Commissioner’s office, traversing the main roads before concluding at the original venue. Following the rally, a discussion and award ceremony took place in the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room, where Deputy Secretary Local Government and Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Riaz Uddin emphasized the shared responsibility of environmental protection. He highlighted the need for afforestation, stating that only 7 to 8 percent of the land is currently forested, far short of the desired one-fourth coverage.
In Gaibandha, the observance was marked by a call to protect the environment from degradation, including plastic pollution. SKS Foundation, a local non-governmental organization, organized programs under the School Led Community Resilience to Disaster and Climate Risk project, funded by Muslim Aid UK Bangladesh Country Office. Activities included a rally from Belka MC High School, followed by a discussion featuring local leaders. Project Manager Afroja Bulbul provided an overview of the project’s implementation in three disaster-prone unions, noting improvements made to school facilities and the distribution of education materials to students.
In Sherpur, the day was celebrated with a rally from the District Collectorate premises and a discussion meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room. Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman and other officials addressed the meeting, emphasizing the need to encourage alternatives to plastic use. The event concluded with the distribution of crests, saplings, and certificates to competition winners.
