Jakarta:World Egg Day is being celebrated today, aiming to raise public awareness about the nutritional benefits of eggs and their importance in a balanced diet. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the observance with the international theme "Protein That Powers and Protects."
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, eggs are an affordable, versatile, and nutritious food option, providing high-quality protein along with essential vitamins and minerals. They play a crucial role in supporting physical growth, muscle development, and overall well-being. In particular, choline found in eggs contributes to brain function and the normal functioning of the nervous system, while other nutrients like vitamin B12, vitamin D, and selenium are also present.
Adequate nutrition, including the consumption of eggs, is especially important during childhood and adolescence when growth and development are critical. For adults, incorporating eggs into a balanced diet can help maintain muscle mass and meet daily nutritional needs. However, a varied diet that includes vegetables, fruits, pulses, fish, and milk is recommended for overall health.
World Egg Day also aims to dispel common misconceptions about the nutritional value of eggs and encourages their appropriate inclusion in diets. Eggs can be prepared in various ways, such as boiled, fried, or poached, and used in numerous dishes. It is important to follow safe food practices, including thorough cooking and proper hygiene during storage.
In Bangladesh, several initiatives have been undertaken to promote the awareness of eggs' nutritional benefits. These include programmes by the Department of Livestock Services, the Bangladesh branch of the World's Poultry Science Association, and the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council. Activities such as rallies, discussions, and nutrition-related events at educational institutions are part of these efforts.
The Department of Livestock Services reports that Bangladesh produced approximately 2,509 crore eggs in the 2025-26 fiscal year, surpassing the annual demand of about 1,855 crore. Addressing fair pricing for egg producers and considering consumers' purchasing power are crucial to making nutritious food affordable for low- and middle-income families, which is vital for public health improvement.
The poultry sector's connection to the rural economy, employment, and food supply system is significant. Ensuring the sector's stability involves supporting small and medium-sized farms, preventing diseases, ensuring safe production, and fostering fair market competition. Additionally, maintaining hygiene standards in egg production, storage, and transportation is essential.
The observance of World Egg Day underscores the importance of making nutritious food accessible, emphasizing nutrition for children's development, and building a safe food system.
