Moscow:Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom has pledged to ensure an early experimental connection of electricity from the first unit of Bangladesh's Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to the national grid.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this commitment was made by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev during a high-level meeting with Bangladesh's Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam in Moscow. The meeting focused on the progress of Bangladesh's first nuclear power project and the timeline for electricity generation from its first unit.

Alexey Likhachev stated that the experimental grid connection from the plant's first unit, which is equipped with a VVER-1200 reactor, could be realized as soon as possible. He emphasized that the project will play a crucial role in ensuring Bangladesh's energy security by supplying environmentally friendly and affordable energy.

Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam noted that the power plant, with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts, is expected to satisfy around 11 percent of Bangladesh's electricity demand.

The meeting also discussed the commissioning and start-up activities for the second unit, which are scheduled to commence next year. Additionally, there were positive discussions about expanding the nuclear energy sector and strengthening bilateral cooperation, building on the success and experience of the Rooppur project.
