Woman gets life term for killing 3-year old nephew in Feni

A Feni court on Thursday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her three-year old nephew in 2019.

Feni District and Sessions Court Judge Begum Jebunnesa pronounced the judgment in presence of the accused.

Lifer Arjina Akter, 33, was also fined Tk 50,000, in default of which she will have to serve three more months in prison.

The court recorded statements of 11 of total 25 witnesses, said Public Prosecutor Hafez Ahmed.

On November 21, 2019, Tariqul Islam’s body was recovered from a field near his house in Dakkhin Mohammadpur village in Parshuram upazila.

Later a murder case was filed at Parshuram Model Police station against anonymous accused following a complaint lodged by Tariqul’s father Mowlana Abu Bakar.

On November 23, as a suspect Arjina Akter, wife of Mowlana Abu Bakar’s brother, was arrested for interrogation by Mahbubur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Parshuram model police station and then Investigation Officer of the case.

The next day, Arjina gave a statement before court confessing to her guilt.

On September 3, 2020, Sub-Inspector Riaul Jabbar and investigation officer of the case submitted a charge sheet of the murder case against Arjina and later on December 10 the court framed charges against her.

The trial in the case began on January 12 this year.
