Dhaka: The United States Charg© d’Affaires in Dhaka, Traci Ann Jacobson, today assured of extending all-out support in enhancing the efficiency of the judiciary and ensuring its independence. She gave this assurance during a courtesy call on Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed at his office in the Supreme Court, as mentioned in a press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during the meeting, discussions focused on enhancing the efficiency of the judiciary in Bangladesh, emphasizing judicial cooperation, human rights protection, and the rule of law. Chief Justice Ahmed highlighted the initiatives undertaken over the past year aimed at developing a robust, independent, and justice-based judicial system. He stressed the judiciary’s role in safeguarding human rights within the country.
Jacobson extended her congratulations to Dr. Refaat Ahmed on completing his first year as Chief Justice and acknowledged his efforts in judicial development. She praised the announcement of a judicial reform roadmap designed to establish a strong, independent, and impartial judiciary. Additionally, she commended the issuance of 12-point directives to ensure transparency in judicial services, the introduction of a capacity test to provide legal aid to defendants, the formation of the Supreme Judicial Appointment Council for judge recruitment, and the enactment of relevant laws.
Jacobson also acknowledged the launch of a Supreme Court helpline for litigants and the implementation of development projects aimed at enhancing the capacity of lower courts. She expressed optimism that under Chief Justice Refaat Ahmed’s leadership, Bangladesh will make significant progress in establishing good governance and ensuring justice.
