Gournadi: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today emphasized the significant role of the United States as one of Bangladesh's closest and most important partners in the nation's ongoing economic progress. He articulated these views during a meeting with interfaith leaders at the Gournadi Catholic Church.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapon highlighted the critical partnership between the two countries, which he believes plays a highly important role in various sectors such as economic prosperity, garment exports, expatriate remittances, and foreign direct investment (FDI). The minister noted that the United States stands as the largest single export destination for Bangladesh's garment industry, a vital component of the nation's economy.
Swapon further elaborated on the economic contributions made by Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the United States. These expatriates regularly remit substantial amounts of money back home, thereby strengthening Bangladesh's economy. Additionally, he pointed out that a significant portion of the foreign direct investment flowing into Bangladesh originates from the United States, making a major contribution to the country's overall economic process.
The event was also attended by US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen, who was the guest of honor. During his visit to Gournadi Upazila in Barishal, Swapon welcomed and congratulated Christensen, expressing gratitude for his presence in the minister's home area. The meeting saw the participation of government officials, heads of religious institutions, and local political leaders, underscoring the importance of this diplomatic relationship.
